How to Find the Perfect Website While Avoiding all the Junk

When you go on the internet these days, on search could give you millions of results for websites relating to your keyword search.  If you are surfing for information, it sometimes can be difficult to find which sites are reliable, and which one’s are not.  You may also be looking for the best price, the most enjoyable, or just a website that is not a scam.  There are methods to do this out there.  We have summarized them for you here to help you improve your next internet search.

Who is the site made by?

It’s so easy to make and put a website, and even easier to lie about who you are.  When someone is being hones, they will usually have an email address or some other way to get a hold of them.  Another thing to look for is if the pages are consistent throughout the site.  Do they have the same color background?  Is the font the same? Is there a logo?  Are there links in the site that work that allows for easy navigation throughout the site?  If you are collecting the information for educational purposes or for work or school, sometimes it’s best to use sites that you already know are trusted and have reliable information.  You can also sometimes tell if a site is reliable by the web address.  For example, if it ends in .org or .edu.

When was the site made, and/or updated?

If a site provides information that was last updated in July of 2004, it may not be accurate for you to use, depending on the type of information you are looking for.  Be sure to know if the things you are looking for were likely to change, or if they are facts that simply remain true.

Is the site easy to read, and information clear, and easy to find?

If a site is scattered and hard to read or understand, it may not be a good choice.  A good website should have its navigation clearly outlined, and its points of interest clearly stated within.  If you are having a hard time determining what the point of the site is, or if you can’t find the specific information it claims to have available, it is probably not reliable and you should try somewhere else.

All these things in combination should enable you to find a site that is suitable for your needs.  Always trust your instinct when using information from somewhere else, and don’t forget to always cite the source!
